Thanksgiving Canada Oven Delights

Turkey on Thanksgiving? Not all families can afford it. Buy chicken pieces instead, wrap them in foil and shove them in the oven. Beans are cheaper so always have them.

October 14 is Thanksgiving in Canada.

Memories. The oven is synonymous with freshly baked scones, called tea biscuits in Canada and America. It is raining. Can you imagine opening the door and being greeted by the aroma of something rising in the oven? That was mama, may she rest in peace.

Time passed, and I met Zodwa, my hairdresser. She would braid my hair while she had something going in the oven. I was not the only customer. That is when I truly appreciated the wonders of the oven. All you have to do, is brush chicken pieces with olive oil-based salad dressing, wrap them in kitchen foil and shove them in the oven for an hour, max. Eat.

Thanksgiving Canada

Just like the U.S., Canada cooks turkey for Thanksgiving but it’s not compulsory. The grocery store weighs turkey. The bigger it is, the more expensive it is. That is why some families buy two or more chickens. They cook faster and the pieces spread around generously. Better still, it will be wise to buy chicken pieces like thighs or drumsticks if the family is bigger than four.

What is good about roasting chicken/turkey, is the juice. I prefer covering the meat in foil because I use the juice over steamed potatoes or sweet potatoes. We don’t have to cook everything in oil. Meat, fish or game have natural oil.

Happy Thanksgiving, and happy oven delights.
