Apple Pie Discontinued

Caution. Please don't change these prices into your local currency. You'll have a heart attack.

Apples are gone from the local grocery store shelves. They used to be on the right hand side, after the door. You couldn’t miss them. Those two shelves are about what? A foot long? The store now has six-packs of soda, new cans of soda, not the brown soda that was synonymous with a great wealthy country, called the United States of America. It was also strategically placed in movies such as Taal.

Those two shelves had red, green and yellow apples with fancy names like Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. Who was Granny Smith? Those apples are green and hard. I don’t understand the name because grandmothers’ teeth are not as strong as their grandsons. The store had loose apples and packs of 6 or 8. What the store didn’t have were the small red apples, common to homes with an apple tree in the backyard. Are you one of those lucky individuals that live on a farm, or grew up in one? Oh! No. Life is hard there. True dat, but you appreciate food more, if you get your hands dirty to produce it. It is also fresh, so are the small apples.

I digress. Where was I? Aah! The discontinued apples. Should I ask somebody? Not advisable. They are usually not in a good mood, like most minimum wage workers. That’s why you see new faces every three months. I moved to the vegetable section to check the price of grapes. That’s how I amuse myself, admire things I cannot afford. Surprise! A handful of apples were nestled between other vegetables. How the mighty has fallen!

What on earth happened to all those apples? Did we stop buying them? If we did, does this mean we stopped baking apple pie? How about apple juice? They used food colourant.
