Movies Sad Ending Quite Rare

Hollywood is limping and the so-called ‘red carpet’ is an attempt to keep afloat the glamour, glitz and make-believe. Hollywood made money on our need to believe that love exists and that we can live happily ever after.

Happiness doesn’t exist. Co-existentialism does. Two people under one roof and sharing the same bed try their best to exist together, if that makes sense. I don’t know about the bed. My grandparents had twin beds. Prince Charles and Prince William and Prince Harry’s mother had separate wings in castles. Before colonization, men in Kwa-Zulu lived on their land and had separate houses for their three or four wives.

Hollywood crushed that co-existentialism, merged the two beds into a double bed, created a ‘master bedroom’ and threw in some roses to perpetuate the illusion of love. That is why most Hollywood movies have a happy ending. Thanks to YouTube, you can make your own movies. You can invest in a good camera and the hardware store has different sizes of lights. They'll tell you about their light colour, very important. Some photography stores still sell reflectors, to light faces. You can also get them online.

Unfortunately, I might not like Hollywood but it’s legacy lives on. Which is? The happy ending. Most YouTube movies I’ve seen have a happy ending. People demand it. Just check the comments. When is Part 2 coming out? YouTube producers know what that means: a happy ending.

There can be no happy ending when there was never a happy life. It is co-existentialism. Marriage is just living together and being blessed with kids. They grow up, leave the nest and it is back to two people co-existing.

Movies with a sad ending is an untapped gold mine. People will relate to it because life is not perfect. That’s why it’s called life. I don’t forget movies with a sad ending, like Dr. Zhivago mama’s favourite. I’m always amused when producers dream of Netflix.

It will remain a dream because recycling American TV crime stories, ‘standard’ Nollywood or Bollywood scripts and movies shot in schools like Sarafina do not work on Netflix. It is looking for unique stories from independent producers, and movies with a sad ending have a better chance of being chosen for film festivals in Canada and Europe. Netflix attends these festivals.
