Before Going Shopping .............

Home fashion shows. Kids can wear your old clothes or grandparents'.
Bugsy Malone, classic movie about dangerous kids. Mobsters.

Before you go shopping this summer, invade the closet, nylon sports bags you use as storage, old suitcases and boxes in the attic or basement. You might realize you don’t have to buy anything because you have two dresses (price tags attached) hanging in the bowels of your closet.

I’m saying bowels because most closets are dark. I know. I’m part of the average nation that needs a torchlight to find anything in dark closets full of over-burdened wire hangers. I have a recurring dream.

What would you like for your birthday?

A walk-in closet.

Rich or poor, it will be fun to do closet invasion before taking credit cards for a walk, at the nearby les galeries or internet shopping. Girls’ rooms will be a revelation. An item that looks like a shirt is actually a dress and what looks like underwear is a top. Girls might try and convince parents that what they have is old school. Mum, I need a new wardrobe. Movies can be very destructive. Some kids think movie lines are real life, and that makes bringing up kids very expensive for most parents.

Home Fashion Shows

Fashion is not new. It’s recycled ideas. Mothers have tried explaining that to daughters since the beginning of time. It’s a vicious circle. That’s too harsh. Let’s say it’s a funny circle. That’s why girls should be present when parents open those old suitcases and boxes.

The family could organize a fashion show with everybody involved in the preparation: deciding where it will be, who will wear what, which kid will be the MC, making a banner, deciding on a ramp, chairs for guests, drinks etc. Preparing boys to model old clothes will be a challenge because grandpa’s Stetson hats will cover the whole face, and his shoes are Size 11. Kids will find a solution though, because they still learn through play.
