Means of payment. No cash. Stores told us they prefer digital payment because of COVID-19, the virus that crash-landed on us in 2020. It sneaks in everywhere. Stores were scared it might attach itself to $10 or $20 dollar bills.

We swipe or tap bank and credit cards. We even tap with phones. These digital means of payments have also changed questions, friendly or hostile cashiers throw at us. They used to say: Cash or cheque? Not anymore. They see cards in our hands and say:

Debit? Credit?

We seldom use cheques, but banks still issue them with outdated details. Take the back for example. There’s a line for a signature.

Cheques are stale news for two reasons. One: companies pay workers, suppliers, mistresses, traffic tickets everything by direct deposit. Whoosh! The money goes straight into business and personal accounts.

Secondly, even if they do, the automatic banking machine at the mall takes cheques. You don’t have to sign them. You punch your account number, tell the machine where you want to deposit the cheque, than slide it in.

We don’t know about tomorrow though, since technology doesn’t go on vacation. Cashiers will be shocked at our response.

CASHIER: How are you paying?

ME: cc.

CASHIER: cc?

ME: Yes, I’ll pay crypto currency.

Cashiers beware.

Comfort Food As Regret Food

Chicken curry. Comfort food is good for the soul, which usually bleeds in winter from icy roads, bad drivers that want to annihilate pedestrians, frozen fingers and toes that take a sabbatical.   What happened to my toes?   I thought I was wearing special socks for boots? Being a passenger is very stressful.   You must listen to the owner of the car, nod and grumble yes to everything he says because you don’t want to piss him off. Two things can happen if you disagree with the driver: he can lose concentration and you all end up in a mash-up accident or stop the car and ask you to get out.   That is the driver’s prerogative.   You must listen to me if you are a passenger in my car.   Let’s flip the script for a minute and sympathise with the driver if she has a passenger who is more intelligent than Albert Einstein. He talks non-stop.   It is all about himself, how right he is, how good he is, how stupid his boss is.
