Canada No Vanity Election Please
Pierre Poilievre is calling for a snap election. Canadians don’t want it but who cares about voters? They are just pawns in a political game of numbers. Remember the snap election Justin Trudeau called on 20 September 2021? He did not get the majority in parliament he wanted. Fast forward to 2024. A snap election just because the Liberal Party broke up with the NDP, will be a waste of time and money.
Canadian politics? I cannot be presumptuous that you know how Canada is governed. Provinces have their own governments. This piece is specifically, about the federal government in Ottawa.
Political party | Leader | Canada Parliament |
Liberal | Justin Trudeau | Prime Minister of Canada |
Conservative | Pierre Poilievre | Official opposition party |
New Democratic Party (NDP) | Jagmeet Singh | Minority party |
The Liberal Party and NDP had a scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours agreement. It had tangible results because Jagmeet Singh got what he wanted: free dental care for people who do not have insurance especially kids and seniors. On 4 September, Jagmeet Singh announced that he was divorcing the Liberal Party, so to speak. The deal is off. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is back to square one: not having a majority government.
Canadians do not want a snap election
Pierre Poilievre wants an election for selfish reasons. He thinks he will win if an election was called today, and not in October 2025, where it is supposed to be. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was equally selfish when he called a snap election in 2021 hoping to get a majority in Parliament. He failed.
Every political party wishes for a majority in Parliament but it is not always possible. Yes, the NDP just broke the agreement with the Liberal Party, but life must go on. Canadians expect political parties to work through their differences, not call a premature election. They don't want to be used as pawns, in your political chess game.
