Zulu Lesson Wave at Somebody

This blog also offers Zulu lessons, a language spoken predominantly in South Africa. We try and give you words you can say in English. Wave is tha-tha-za in Zulu. Wait! Translation dilemma?

Tha-tha-za. Means to wave. You say the first two parts like tally and the last part like xylophone.

Tha-tha-ze-la. This is to wave at somebody. You say the first two parts like tally, the third part like Zelda and the last like love.

1. Justin Trudeau waved at supporters when he won the election in October 2019, allowing him to be Canada’s Prime Minister for round 2.

2. Prince Harry, told Meghan Markle to wave back at fans, long before the wedding.

3. Kids on strollers/prams wave when mothers wheel them off the bus.

4. Somebody across the street waves ‘hi’ to you.

5. Cousins wave goodbye when they go back home after a visit to your home.

Tha-tha-za. There might be an emoji about this, but what I’m sure about, is that tha-tha-za is a happy motion that involves the hand and a smile on your face. It is not hard and menacing like someone’s face which says: I’ll get you.

Queens, kings, prince and princesses are losing the waving competition. More and more, the public waves enthusiastically at NBA, NFL, soccer and baseball players, movie stars, musicians, rap stars and women who don’t like wearing clothes.
