Movie Bringing Down The House

What do you do for a living?

I’m a movie critic.

We seldom go to the movies because our laptops are the big screen now. That’s why there are online critics paid to do exactly that, but the best critic is yourself. You might discover gold nuggets ‘professional’ movie critics missed.

MOVIE: Bringing Down The House

CAST: Queen Latifah, Steve Martin, Steve Harris

DIRECTOR: Adam Shankman

My Gold Nuggets

We are not scared of mama bear, who can stroll into town looking for food because there’s no more ice at home, up north in Canada. Her neighborhood is melting because of climate change we created through industrialization. What are we scared of then? The internet and its power.

This movie is fiction but it deals with internet possibilities. Anything is possible online. Anything? Yes. A successful lawyer can be defrauded by a woman behind bars. Her online photo is another woman. Stolen identity, they call it. We know that the internet blurs fiction and reality, but we still fall victim to scams and other deceit.

What is also indelible in my mind about this movie, is kids’ pain, when love disappears. It explores how the two kids individually, deal with their parents’ separation, who love each other but the man’s work totally consumes him. It’s very hard to understand how people who love each other dearly decide to break up, to preserve that love. Does that make sense?

Well! I think it does because when gas in the love tank blinks red, it becomes more deadly than COVID-19. Sometimes it’s better to walk away. That is what happened in the movie. Queen Latifah and Steve Harris play girlfriend and boyfriend. The love tank is empty, and that is how she landed in prison for a crime she didn’t commit.

Bringing Down The House needs patience because it has predictable Hollywood scenes like nosey neighbours and old men trying to act hip. There’s even a gold digger who ‘robs’ geriatric homes. Great ass whooping scene between her and Queen Latifah’s character. Have fun.  Do your own critique.
