Hakeem Jeffries Dry Sense of Humour
Yesterday: I love you so much. I can’t live without you.
Today: I hate you. Don’t touch me.
Yes I’m a producer and script writer, but these lines are not mine. They are from 101 American soap operas and Nigerian movies. I’m not a Hollywood fan but I enjoyed 101 Dalmatians, a story about Cruella, an evil woman, who wanted to make a coat from the little puppies.
I digress. Where was I? Yes, I loved you yesterday. I hate you today. That is the situation with political parties. It is like a love affair. Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, put it bluntly at the Democratic National Convention held on 19-22 August, in Chicago.
Hakeem Jeffries was talking about Donald Trump and likened him to an old boyfriend that doesn’t want to face facts and accept that it’s over. He must disappear. We’re done. Hit the road Jack, don’t you come back no more, no more (it’s a song) or Rihanna’s song TAKE A BOW. I don’t think we make a clean break with our political parties because they represent what we think is ideal, or right for our life and for the country that gives us shelter.
It is more of a lover’s tiff. Promises were made. Promises were broken, but the bond remains. Sometimes, the break-up is necessary to save the relationship. Liz Cheney for example. She’s a generational Republican. It never occurred to her that one day, she will vote for a Democrat, let alone campaign with her like she is doing with Kamala Harris.
Make no mistake about it. She’s not looking for a job because she is a forever Republican. She and her fellow Republicans are trying to save their party and they cannot do that in a leaking America. They can only be Republican in a democracy. Therefore, who is the boyfriend/ husband here, the Party or America? For Liz Cheney it is both. Country and party, but party can wait for now, while this election patches leaking America, thanks to Donald Trump.
