Divorce? Not An Option Sweetie
The choice to stay in a broken marriage fraught with physical and mental abuse, is not taken by women alone. Men too. They stay for different reasons but we know more about women because of the assault. Co-workers know when the HR Manager’s make-up is over the top, and she looks like a masquerade. Co-workers know when the IT Manager’s arm is in a sling once again.
We don’t know why men stay in unhappy marriages because they don’t come to work wearing shades, hiding black eyes. Men also don’t cry. They are supposed to be stoic. One of the reasons why men stay in beyond-repair marriages is work, especially men whose work is always in the camera eye like coaches, heads of companies, judges, actors or men who run successful companies.
Last year, Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister and his wife Sophie announced they are parting ways. She lives somewhere else now but that did not affect his job. They asked for privacy and Canadians obliged. He still runs the country.
In 2016-2020, it was common knowledge that First Lady Melania Trump did not want her husband President Trump, to hold her hand. She is also a no-show in his trials. The camera doesn’t lie. Barack and Michelle Obama were a tough act to follow because they were always hand in hand. The Trumps are still married.
Not all high profile men are that lucky. They tolerate the marriage blackmail because separation or divorce will destroy their careers. Some wives are vocal about it. Leave me, and I will incinerate your perfect image. Maybe the husband wanted to leave because the other woman was tired of ‘understanding’ and wanted to be Mrs. Doctor. In some countries, it is an open secret that the Honourable Minister sleeps at 555 Potoman Road, but in the evening, he is photographed with his wife in all black-tie events. Marriage blackmail? It must take a toll on both sides.
