Hair Cut Gone Up
Cross purposes. Black men prefer hairstyles that befit hair they were blessed with, while black women prefer blonde wigs they can flip every 30 seconds. Self-hate, to be passed on to daughters and their daughters.
How do I know I’m broke? When I spend more than five minutes wondering how the barber now charges me $35 for a hair cut that was $20 yesterday. Yesterday? Well! It’s a figure of speech.
The problem is going to bed. We go to sleep, wake up, take a shower, go to the store or barbershop only to find that prices have gone up. Good old whole wheat bread is $3.40, when it was $2.50 yesterday. Forget ‘designer bread’ with the nuts, seeds, grass and what have you. You fork out more than five bucks.
I must go to the barbershop today. I don’t have a choice now, do I? I don’t have money to buy a blonde wig, that I can remove from my eyes every 30 seconds. I cringe when I see my sisters flipping the wig, like a white woman flipping her god given hair. I guess we don’t have mirrors as black women. Do we know how ridiculous a blonde wig looks on a black skin? Poor things. We hate ourselves and always will. Have you ever seen a white woman rocking an afro? They wouldn’t dare. We’ll accuse them of cultural appropriation.
I digress big time. Where was I? Aaah! Putting together some money for a desperately-needed hair cut.
