Lawyers and Pro Bono
I don’t have a bevy of lawyers because I’m a law abiding citizen. Oh! You have two? I’m sorry. I’m not implying you indulge in criminal activities and need lawyers, in case the men in uniform bang your door, like in the movies.
I don’t have lawyers because I use my discretion. Example. Some cashiers cannot count because they were trained in debit and credit cards. The supervisor reassured them: ”Don’t worry about math. Nobody uses cash anymore.” Discretion kicks in should cashiers give me $3.25 change, instead of $2.25. I pocket the dollar because that is not a crime that needs a lawyer. Come to think of it, it is not my crime at all. It is the cashier’s. She was negligent with the boss’ money.
I also don’t have lawyers because of that small detail called legal fees. They normally don’t work for free and when they do, it has a fancy word pro bono. From the little I know, pro bono work is for humanitarian causes, people who cannot afford lawyers because of some social injustice. Well! I don’t need it. I’m not a humanitarian case. I’m just a broke human being.
