Universities Down Sizing
American college students are currently hogging headline news for their involvement in foreign policy. Canadian students don’t want to be left behind. That’s why they are also mounting campus protests about what is happening in Gaza and Israel. I cannot comment about it because I know very little about contentious issues, on both sides. Students don’t have that restriction. They protest because it is a student thing to do.
Which brings us to the role of universities in 2024. A college or university degree is supposed to prepare you for a better future. Which is? A good job. What you studied determines where you hope to land in the job market. It is definitely not foreign policy or international studies, if students can change foreign policy because of available information. When two elephants fight, it’s the elephant that provides more information about the fight, that wins public sympathy.
This fight also demonstrates the power of the new university. Which is? The internet. Colleges must down size. The Israel-Gaza conflict is one example of why college departments like foreign policy should cease to exist. The little I know about the conflict comes from the internet. I don’t need a university degree to understand it. That is why top-paid basketball and football players have online classes and will graduate, just like the millions that trudge to class in the snow.
Which subjects will remain standing, after college downsizing? Tax Law, Contract Law, Constitutional Law, Engineering, Technology and Medicine.
