Bed Time Stories Gone

Mother delivered triplets. They are asleep in the tikinagan.

Parents with triplets must have a lot on their plate. Take bed time stories for example. Do they use a microphone to read to all three little darlings? Definitely not. The mic is not natural. A parent’s voice is soothing, and lulls them to dreamland. Do triplets doze off at the same time? Never mind.

Which brings us to bed time stories. One day they will become a memory because of all things digital. Parents introduce kids to digital toys quite early. Therefore, they are more comfortable with touching digital screens than turning book pages. Digital toys are also mobile, from the dinner table to the floor, car, garden and bed, without getting torn.

Bed time stories nudged kids’ imagination about faraway places and legends. There’s no mystery anymore because they touch their digital toys and it unfolds, together with colors and music. Bed time stories increased mummy’s or daddy’s importance as the information giver. They knew what books to buy and read them to kids, who were passive listeners. Digital toys merge that into one person, the kid. Kids just touch a screen for information. There’s no middle man.

Parents are partly to blame for the disappearance of the bed time ritual, because they are addicted to digital toys themselves. They are so in love with them, they don’t have time for talking to their kids, let alone read them bed time stories.

What then, is the future of publishers that specialize in children’s books?
