Artificial Intelligence Self Serve Cashiers

The computer drives me crazy when it tells me to remove something I put in the bagging area. You are not a human being.

Anyway, many big grocery stores have the self-serve option. Take your shopping basket to the machine and follow prompts. The first one is START NOW. Bad news for people looking for work even if it’s minimum wage jobs. Replacing humans with machines in not new. It’s the capitalist way.

Self-serve cashier machines are not born equal. Some are user friendly with simple instructions in English. I assume machines in Poland, France, Germany and all of Europe have simple instructions in their languages.

However, and a big however, stores have a staff member on stand-by that helps customers at self-serve cashier machines. In one store, they reduced cashiers from 7 to just one. That’s the person who comes to you when you press the HELP button.

The problem at these machines is assumption. They have icons everybody understands, like the Wi-Fi icon. That’s an assumption, right there. Not necessarily. The sun and moon are common icons, not icons that warn you the phone battery is running low.

Another assumption are loyalty or points cards. The store cannot assume that everyone waiting in line for a self-serve cashier understands what an optimum card is. Pressing that accidentally holds up the line. That’s why stores have those stand-by workers.

Having said that, cashing out your own groceries is the best way to avoid long lines after work, especially if you have a few items in your shopping basket.

Comfort Food As Regret Food

Chicken curry. Comfort food is good for the soul, which usually bleeds in winter from icy roads, bad drivers that want to annihilate pedestrians, frozen fingers and toes that take a sabbatical.   What happened to my toes?   I thought I was wearing special socks for boots? Einstein Passengers

Being a passenger is very stressful.   You must listen to the owner of the car, nod and grumble yes to everything he says because you don’t want to piss him off. Two things can happen if you disagree with the driver: he can lose concentration and you all end up in a mash-up accident or stop the car and ask you to get out.   That is the driver’s prerogative.   You must listen to me if you are a passenger in my car.   Let’s flip the script for a minute and sympathise with the driver if she has a passenger who is more intelligent than Albert Einstein. He talks non-stop.   It is all about himself, how right he is, how good he is, how stupid his boss is. Einstein is also a driving instructor.   “Careful.   Look at that guy.   Is he crazy or something? ” says Einstein.
