The Gamer's Wife

“My husband is a gamer.”

She said it at the gym. Some locker room neighbours provided the obligatory smile. Others sent out blank stares for two reasons I guess. Life is a game. Few win, many lose. Therefore they don’t think being a gamer is headline news. Secondly, they probably don’t know what a gamer does.

Maybe the husband doesn’t want to fly or drive to casinos to sit around tables and gamble James Bond style or like the God of Gamblers, the classic movie from Hong Kong cine masters. So, he gambles online. Sorry, he games online.

We tend to associate video games with kids. We also used them as baby sitting gadgets, before cellphones. However there are adults who love video games. Call them young at heart.

They don’t frequent video arcades because of their age. They play in the comfort of their own home, thanks to laptop computers. Players with buoyant bank accounts have astonishing hardware they hook up to their television screens, as high as inflation.

“My husband is a gamer.”

Nobody asked for clarification when she made the statement. She’s the only one who knows what the declaration meant. Was she thinking aloud? Maybe it’s something she thinks about a lot when he is playing online video games, which is a lot.

What will never cross her mind, is that he is full time into MMORPG.
