TIFF Actors Safe for Now

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is back in action after COVID-19 left everything on the ‘park’ lever.

Once again, actors and actresses on the red carpet are smiling at the fans behind the barricades, hoisting cellphones or edging closer to try and get a selfie with Oprah. It’s usually young crowds that do not care who raised the money to make the movie or who directed it, but producers care for many reasons.

Recognition. Producers in LA, Milan, Cannes, Hong Kong or Mumbai monitor TIFF closely because if a film takes Toronto, it might end up winning subsequent film festivals. TIFF is also good with exposing new filmmakers with their first project: a short film or documentary.

Raising money. Producers need money to pay actors, buy plane tickets, hire camera crews, rent huge production trucks, get permission to shoot in certain locations and hotels. Like all film festivals, TIFF is a meeting place for producers. I have extra cash I want to invest in movies, you need it because you have an idea for a potential blockbuster, but you don’t have it.

Actors and actresses who are in TIFF ‘22 are safe for now because it means they are still important, despite the change in venue. Some cinemas have shut down because we watch movies on laptops and phones now.

However, the glitz and glamour of seeing them on the red carpet still matters, even for young crowds who don’t know who they are.

‘Who’s that?’
